January 16, 2009 Tevet 120, 5769Dear MJCDS Parents, Our prayers are with the Greenspan Family as Jonathan underwent his second surgery on Friday. Hopefully, he will have a full recovery and need only mend without any other major medical interventions. Our thanks extend to Ms. Adrienne Borisy Gross for her continued art work with our students. Students enjoyed doing contour drawing and working with charcoal chalk. They also had the opportunity to use special rub knead erasers. They loved her visit on Wednesday. We miss Lianna Pront and Maya Poler and are looking forward to their return. Maya has been sick and we are hoping that she is now healthy and that all of our students stay healthy. Please if your child is sick do keep her home to recuperate properly. We don?t wish to spread germs though we otherwise usually enjoy sharing. During General Studies students continued learning about the inauguration through a study in Scholastic News. They focused on writing this week as well utilizing different parts of the writing process including editing and revising. Additionally, students did individual math work that employed base ten blocks. Some students used these manipulatives like old pros, readily applying the concept to other problems within the lesson. First grade students also worked on word problems. In Hebrew and Judaic studies students reviewed the Book of Genesis/Bereshit and began a study of Exodus/Shemot. Students also continued with their Hebrew acquisition. First grade students are enjoying meeting various ?new students? (characters in their Tal Am series). Kindergarten students are focusing on beginning letter recognition. Reminder: With the advent of cold weather please have your child(ren) bring a hat, gloves, and scarf to school. Also, send in chap stick if your child needs it. Thank you for your help in this matter. Refuah Shlama: We continue to send out prayers for Jonathan Greenspan who had his second surgery January 16th.
