Dear Parents, Grandparents and Friends of MJCDS, May you be inscribed in the Book of Life and may your fast be easy. We welcome many new readers to the Friday Letter, written weekly by the MJCDS teachers to inform families and friends about a sampling of school activities that occurred during the past week and to alert readers about upcoming events. If you would like to have your name removed from the electronic mailing of the Friday Letter you can do so by writing to merle.sweet@madisonjewishdayschool.com. This past week we continued with our 5770 New Year themes as we utilized the 10 Days of Awe to prepare ourselves for Yom Kippur. Our K/1 class read various Yom Kippur liturgy, learned the words and concepts behind, t'shuvah/ return, t'filah/ prayer and tzedekkah/ giving, and heard stories about Jonah and the whale. They too continued with their foray into Hebrew lessons by being officially introduced or reintroduced to aleph and certain aleph words. They learned a song about bread and Torah as well. The 1/2 students continued on with the Tal Am immersion Hebrew program. During their time they extended their vocabulary and grammar development while also learning about our High Holidays. They particularly enjoyed singing songs that reflected the spirit of the times. They learned about the differences between major and minor fast days as well. In general studies the K/1 class studied the Scholastic News articles, "Are You Ready to Learn," and "Safety Superheroes." They then made Venn diagram comparing what animals and children do. They discussed indoor and outdoor safety and behavior in school. The 1 /2 class looked at their new magazine issue of Time for Kids. They checked the new layout, learned the new vocabulary, and discussed environment (what it is, inside, outside, basic needs, what we do to care for the environment, etc.). They also covered a story about pythons.
